Baby Sawyer is Here!

I'd like you to meet Sawyer Andrew Harris.

Born April 21st at 11:31p, weighing 8 pounds, 12 ounces and 21 inches long.

When they announced his weight there was a lot of commotion in the room, nurses talking and bustling about, and when I heard her say 8 pounds, 12 ounces I thought surely I misunderstood her.  I loudly said, "WHAT?" and when she repeated it, I actually said, "Oh sh*t!"  To which she said, "Yep!"  I kept telling my doctor this baby had to come out asap, that there was simply no more room left for him to grow.  Guess I was right!

Of course he made his entrance on a day we had a wedding.  After weeks of contractions I again, like with Ella, didn't really think I was going to have a baby that day.  I woke up at midnight having somewhat painful contractions, but with a toddler and a wedding to get on, I just ignored them and kept going.  Funny how much more uncomfortable-ness you can tolerate the second time around since your precious toddler wants you to hold her all.the.way over to Sassy and Poppy's house.

When I finally laid down to take a nap (read: realize my contractions were happening more often, time them and wish to heck I could actually sleep because surely I was not having a baby that night) I got a text from our friend Frank who was managing the wedding that night....

Him:  Having a wonderful time.  Wish you were here.
Me:  Haha!  I've forced myself to lay down for a minute.  I'll be over in a while.  I feel so weird not being there, I don't know what to do with myself.

After he heard the news of Sawyer's birth I got this....

Him:  Obviously you found something to do with yourself :-)

I told him I had gotten so bored I decided to birth a baby!

We couldn't decide on a name the entire time I was pregnant and S was lovingly referred to as Eggbert...or Eggie for short.  Shaun and I couldn't agree on anything and neither of us just loved any names.  I hoped that when we saw him, we'd just know instantly what his name should be.  Yeah, not so much.  About 10 minutes after he was born, Shaun says, "Hey babe, I think we need to name him, huh?"  I told him yes, we did but what?  That's when our awesome nurses and doctor stepped in, this kiddo has a name thanks to them.  They asked us what our favorite ones were and we told them we didn't have any but had tossed around Sawyer recently.  When I said that, everyone in the room started yelling "That's it!  OMG I love it!  That's one of my favorite names!!  He looks like a Sawyer!"  So I looked at Shaun and said "What do you think?"  He told me it sounded good to him, so baby boy was named Sawyer.

His middle name was easy, we'd had that since we found out we were having snails and puppy dog tails.  He is named after my dad and Shaun's grandfather was named Andrew as well.  I'll never forget when my dad came in the room after he found out the name (we'd kept it a secret from him that we were using his middle name) and he looked me in the eye and asked if we had really known the name all along and just didn't tell people.  I immediately thought he was talking about the name Sawyer and I tried to convince him that no, we hadn't just not told anyone, we really couldn't pick a name!  After unsuccessfully trying to tell him that, I realized he was talking about the middle name.  I smugly replied, "Yes, we had that all along, just didn't tell you!"

E meeting her baby brother for the first time. When she first walked in the room and saw me holding him, she flipped. I guess when you are the princess, it's hard to share your crown.

But after awhile, she got curious.  Everything she says is accompanied by this expression...doesn't matter is she's asking a question or making a serious statement.  Here she was asking, "Is that baby brother?" while gently poking him in the face.

Even before I got pregnant, E had mastered calming a baby.  She would carry her baby dolls around the house patting their backs and shushing them.  It warms my heart to see my little mama!

Finally going home.  I apparently gave birth to a gnome.

Getting Ready

Somehow, through the massive exhaustion that comes with having a raging mad toddler and being 38 weeks pregnant, I got with Heather at Eclectic Images to do some maternity/family pictures.  I knew that I wanted to get pictures of the last weeks as a family of three, but somehow things aren't as easy once you actually become a family of three.  But I love how Heather always magically gets "the picture".  You know, the one where we are all smiling, looking at the camera and my baby girl is being so incredibly sweet and cute that I forget about all the drama queen-temper tantrum-NOOOOOOOO Mommy-whiny baby moments she has.

This is exactly why pictures mean so much to me...they capture the good times, the sweet moments that you know you want to remember for the rest of your life.  I know my memory is already terrible and I have visions of myself at 80, forcing my many grandchildren and their unsuspecting friends to relive my happy memories.

So here is Baby Brother...in the form of a basketball.
